Choose the banner that matches its location

A profile banner sits behind your personal profile; a server banner appears above the server’s channel list. They use different shapes. Discord’s profile guide gives a minimum of 680×240 and a file under 10MB. Its server guide recommends 960×540, a 16:9 canvas. This page starts with the profile preset; switch to the server preset for a server header. Still PNG, JPG and WebP inputs export as PNG, while animated GIFs remain GIFs.

Choosing your settings

The crop follows the selected banner ratio. Move X and Y to keep faces or text inside the wide strip; changing the preset recenters the crop. Transparent padding keeps the whole image but leaves unused space. Uploading a custom profile image or animation requires Nitro. Static server banners require Boost Level 2, animated server banners Level 3. Server byte limits are not specified in the cited guide: the editable 1MB preparation target here is a GIFBloom suggestion, not an official upload limit.

If the result needs another pass

If your subject is cut off, move the crop or choose padding. If an animation misses the target, trim it or explicitly allow frame reduction. A correctly sized file does not unlock Nitro or server perks, and acceptance still needs checking in Discord. Use the separate avatar and sticker pages for those placements.

GIF timing note: missing, 0 ms and 10 ms frame delays are read as 100 ms. Other supported delays are retained unless the task changes timing or the frame sequence. Re-encoded animation may therefore differ from a viewer that handles unusually short delays differently.

Good to know

What size is a Discord banner?

For a personal profile the cited minimum is 680×240. For a server the recommendation is 960×540, 16:9. Select the preset for the location you are editing.

Can I make an animated banner?

An animated GIF stays animated here. Custom profile banners require Nitro; animated server banners require Boost Level 3.

Is 1MB the server banner limit?

No. The official server banner guide we checked does not specify a byte limit. 1MB is an editable preparation suggestion. The profile guide separately requires files under 10MB.

Will resizing stretch my image?

Cropping fills the selected ratio; padding preserves the whole picture. Neither mode stretches the source. Processing stays in your browser.
